The mystery vegetable...

Our school has been giving out novelty eraser packs as prizes for students who do their homework all the time. These ones are pretty cute; they're in the shape of fruits and vegetables.



There's a carrot, pumpkin, some bananas, an eggplant, a lettuce head... pretty straightforward, right?

But hold up...

What's that funny brown thing?

Upon closer inspection, it looked like this:





I asked all my co-workers, but none of them knew what it was. Some thought it was an artichoke, but artichokes are green, and more of a round shape.

I even asked my students, but they didn't know either. Sweet potato and corn were the most common answers, but neither of them really fit because... sweet potatoes don't have strange layers on the outside and corn is not brown. u__u

Can any of you guys can identify the mystery vegetable and put me out of my misery? (Yes, I'm a nosy person.. I simply must know everything! >:D)
